Emergency Appointments
We’re accredited to provide a Primary Eyecare Assessment and Referral Service (PEARS). This is also known as the Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS) scheme.
This means we may be able to see you in an emergency if you have:
A recent and sudden change to your vision
In-growing eyelashes
Irritation and inflammation
A significant recent sticky discharge from your eye
Something in your eye
Pain in your eye
A recent or sudden increase of flashers and floaters
Dry, gritty and uncomfortable eyes
Watery eyes
Red eye
Go to Accident and Emergency if you have:
Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
Significant trauma such as a penetrating injury or lacerations to your eye or eyelid
Chemical injury or burns
Problems arising from recent eye surgery
Your GP, practice nurse, pharmacist or another optician who isn’t PEARS/CUES accredited can refer you to the service or you can also self-refer.
The service is FREE if the GP you’re registered with is part of the MECS/PEARS scheme.
We can still see you in an emergency if your GP is not part of the scheme, for a nominal fee.

We guarantee that we will see you on the same day or within 24 hours.
Once we’ve examined your eyes, we’ll either treat you ourselves or:
Book you an urgent appointment at the hospital eye clinic if your condition is serious
Refer you to the hospital eye clinic if you need to be seen by them but your condition is not urgent
Advise you to see your GP if your eye condition is related to your general health
Advise you to visit your local pharmacist for medication
What our PEARS accreditation means
Our accreditation under PEARS proves we are an ophthalmic practitioner with the specialist knowledge, skills and equipment needed to carry out a detailed eye examination. Not all opticians are qualified to this degree, even if they have the necessary equipment.
Therefore, if you are referred to us or you find you need to see us in an emergency, please rest assured. We are highly-qualified and experienced and will always provide you with the best possible eye care.
